Carlos Rodon Reaches 110 IP, Vests Right To Opt Out After Season

Jul 22, 2022 8:45 AM

Carlos Rodon reached 110 innings pitched on Thursday night during his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The two-year, $44 million deal Rodon signed with the San Francisco Giants this past offseason affords him the right to opt out after this year upon reaching 110 innings.

Rodon has pitched very well this season. Barring an injury or significant dip in performance, the left-hander will likely surpass the $22.5 million he could have made with the Giants in 2023.

The San Diego Padres and Joe Musgrove are optimistic about reaching an agreement on an extension this week, according to a report.

The two sides recently resumed negotiations on a long-term deal.

San Diego originally acquired Musgrove in a three-team deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees in January 2021.

Rangers, Martin Perez Haven't Engaged In Extension Talks

Jul 21, 2022 8:55 AM

Martin Perez is interested in working out a contract extension with the Texas Rangers as the trade deadline nears.

Perez signed a one-year deal last offseason and the Rangers are more than seven games out of a playoff spot less than two weeks before the trade deadline.

Despite that, both sides have expressed a desire to work out a long-term deal.

"We haven't talked anything about an extension," the left-hander said. "I signed with Texas again. That was my home for a long time. I feel great there. But I don't know what their plans are. ... I'd like to stay. It's the same when you go back home and you always want to stay."

Perez began his career with the Rangers before leaving for the Minnesota Twins before the 2019 season.

Red Sox Viewed Matt Olson's Extension As Model For Rafael Devers

Jul 19, 2022 8:56 AM

The Boston Red Sox and Rafael Devers were reportedly $100 million apart in talks about a contract extension prior to the start of the season.

According to a new report, the Red Sox viewed Matt Olson's extension with the Atlanta Braves as a model for a Devers deal.

Olson signed an eight-year, $168 million extension with the Braves just a day after the club acquired him in a trade with the Oakland Athletics.

Both Devers and Olson are in the same service-time class, and were under control through the 2023 via a final year of arbitration eligibility.

GM Sees 'Map' For Angels To Contend With Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani

Jul 13, 2022 9:04 AM

Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani are two of the American League's most productive players, yet the Los Angeles Angels are 12 games below .500.

The playoff field has been expanded but they also sit eight games back of the sixth and final postseason berth. Barring a major turnaround, the Angels will miss the playoffs for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.

"There's definitely a formula to win around them -- and it's a deeper team," Perry Minasian said. "You can do that in a lot of different ways. The draft's part of it, but free agency is part of that, trades is part of that. I definitely see a road map to putting a competitive team on the field with those guys. They're great players; they've really performed well. I think they deserve all the accolades they get daily; I'm looking forward to watching both of them in the All-Star Game.

"I think they're two of the best players in baseball, and we're lucky to have them."

Hal Steinbrenner Won't Comment On Talks With Aaron Judge

Jul 7, 2022 8:27 AM

Addressing the media for the first time this season, Hal Steinbrenner said the New York Yankees wouldn't offer up any information about contract negotiations with Aaron Judge.

"No matter what happens during the season, we're not going to give any updates. We're just not going to," Steinbrenner said. "I completely agree with Aaron, and still do, that in no way, shape or form can this be a distraction. So the sole focus is winning a championship. That's all anyone needs to worry about right now."

Steinbrenner was referring to Judge's previous statement that he would continue negotiations only after the season so that talks would not be a distraction.

When asked if he was confident the Yankees would re-sign Judge, Steinbrenner circumvented the topic.

"There's no doubt we're hopeful that is the case, but there's a lot of discussion to be had," he said. "I'm always willing to talk, of course, and we're going to be doing that at one point or another, but we're just not going to be talking about if that happens and when it happens; we're not going to be talking about anything 'til the season's over."
